How Can Dental Implants Help Me Improve My Smile?

September 21, 2012

Are you missing one or more teeth? Traditional restorative dentistry options like crowns, bridges, and dentures can help you fill in those gaps. What they can’t do, though, is replace your missing tooth’s underlying structure. For that you need a revolutionary service known as dental implants.

Unlike traditional options, dental implants are structured like a natural tooth with a replacement tooth on top and a replacement root—often made of titanium—underneath. With this combination of crown and root, patients of D’Amico & Mauck, DDS in Aurora can enjoy a smile that looks and feels completely natural.

If you’re interested in restoring your smile with dental implants, the first step is finding out if you’re a candidate. During a consultation appointment with Dr. Nicholas D’Amico or Dr. Matt Mauck, we can determine if dental implants are the right service for you. If they are, you can expect your procedure to proceed in two phases.

In the first phase, a trusted oral surgeon with place the titanium screws that make up your prosthetic roots. Because titanium is a biocompatible metal, the bone tissue in your jaw will fuse with these screws over time, creating a solid, natural foundation for your new smile.

As that happens, D’Amico & Mauck, DDS will design and create your custom-made restoration. Your titanium roots can support a wide variety of restorative options, from single crowns to bridges and partial or full dentures, making them one of the most versatile dental services available.

When your titanium root and your jaw have had time to bond, the second phase of your dental implant restoration will involve the attachment of your new tooth (or teeth) to your implant. With your new teeth in place, your procedure will be complete and you can return to your regular schedule with a fully restored.

Are you ready to learn more about dental implants? Call D’Amico & Mauck, DDS in Aurora to schedule your consultation appointment. Our office serves patients from the greater Denver area, including Centennial, Englewood, and Parker.

Extra Protection from Concussion with an Athletic Mouthguard

August 31, 2012

If you play a contact sport like football, hockey, or boxing, you know how important an athletic mouthguard is for protecting your teeth and tongue. But did you know that an athletic mouthguard can also offer extra protection from concussions?

It’s true!

A custom-made athletic mouthguard will actually absorb some of the force incurred from falls, collisions, or other forms of physical activity during play, helping athletes avoid a serious concussion. You might think of them as acting like shock absorbers that protect the jaw and the base of the skull from becoming violently jarred.

That makes wearing an athletic mouthguard absolutely essential for some sports, like the ones mentioned above. But it’s not just football players and hockey players who can benefit. The American Dental Association and the Academy of Sports Dentistry recommends that athletes from just about any sport wear an athletic mouthguard, including athletes involved in:

  • Basketball
  • Track and field
  • Gymnastics
  • Martial arts
  • Skateboarding
  • Soccer
  • Softball, and more

To find out more about how athletic mouthguards can offer you extra protection from concussions and other injuries, call the dental office of D’Amico and Mauck today. During a simple visit with us at our Aurora office, we’d be happy to explain the advantages and how we can help you.

We look forward to hearing from you!

How Does Your Oral Health Affect Your Overall Health?

August 17, 2012

For some, it may still come as a surprise to hear that oral health and overall wellbeing are closely connected, but it’s true. Last December, a report from The Wall Street Journal revealed that what happens to your smile can influence what happens in the rest of your body. In this post, we’d like to focus on two health problems in particular: cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

A Bridge between Your Mouth and Your Body

When we say that your oral health affects your overall health, we’re talking about a specific aspect of your oral health—periodontal disease, which you might know better as gum disease.

How does periodontal disease affect overall health? By creating pockets between the teeth and gums. It’s through these pockets that bacteria and plaque are able to gain access to the rest of the body. You might think of them acting like a bridge, a window, or better yet, a subway. From these pockets, these harmful things are carried to other parts of the body, where they can potentially cause other problems.

The heart, in particular, is vulnerable. That’s because bacteria and plaque from the mouth can irritate the arteries, resulting in the production of a protective plaque that can harden and block the flow of blood. When blood flow is restricted, the result can be a heart attack, among other problems.

The connection between oral health and diabetes is more mysterious. Researchers and medical professionals are still debating whether patients with periodontal disease are more susceptible to diabetes or if it’s the other way around. Regardless, the connection is no less real, and patients with diabetes are advised to pay close attention to the health of their gums.

How can our patients from Aurora and beyond do that? The best way is through great at-home care and with regular visits and cleanings at our dental office. During your regular visit, Dr. Nicholas D’Amico or Dr. Matt Mauck will have the chance to examine your smile for signs of periodontal disease and other serious oral health conditions. We can also offer advice on any follow-up treatment you might need, in addition to helping you improve your at-home routine.
