What Does Periodontal Disease Have to Do With Pregnancy?

When you think of gum disease, or periodontal disease, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it swollen gums, bleeding when you floss or increased sensitivity? What about babies? Though a newborn child probably isn’t even on the list of things you think about when you consider periodontal disease, perhaps it should be. Gum disease can actually prove incredibly dangerous to an unborn baby if its mother fails to receive proper treatment. This is why our Drs. D’Amico and Mauck in Aurora, CO offer exceptional preventative dental care to all of our patients, defending against gum disease and other oral health conditions before they cause a potentially serious problem.

The Important Connection

When a pregnant woman suffers from periodontal disease, the harmful bacteria in her mouth can travel through her bloodstream and affect the well being of her baby. In fact, women with untreated gum disease are seven to eight times more likely to give birth to a preterm infant.

Babies born before 37 weeks are at a higher risk for complications like respiratory failure, heart conditions and digestive issues. They may not feed normally and are typically underweight for the first few weeks to months of their lives.

Fortunately, periodontal therapy and routine cleanings are all that it takes to protect yourself and keep your bundle of joy safe and healthy. If you’re pregnant or thinking about making an addition to your family, Drs. D’Amico and Mauck would like to welcome you to our office in Aurora, CO for a cleaning and exam to ensure optimal dental health, for now and in the future. Contact us today to see what a difference our commitment to our patients can make for you. We also serve patients in Parker, Englewood, Denver, Centennial and the surrounding areas.

Emergency Dental Care Tips

October 3, 2013

Filed under: General DentistryMatt Mauck @ 2:11 pm

Dental emergencies are, simply put, frightening. You can never prepare for them because they often occur suddenly and by accident; even worse, no amount of brushing, flossing, or preventive dentistry care can prepare you for the damage they cause. The most important thing to remember, though, is not to panic. Here at D’Amico and Mauck, DDS in Aurora, our team is here to help. Here are some helpful tips from Dr. D’Amico and Dr. Mauck about what steps you should take in certain emergency dental situations:

Knocked Out Tooth

First, rinse the tooth very gently with water. Then, if feasible, place the tooth back into its original socket. If this is impossible, place it in a cup or baggie of milk instead and contact our office at once. Once you arrive, we’ll be able to assess whether we can successfully reattach the tooth.

Knocked Out Temporary Crown

You shouldn’t encounter this situation with us normally since we mainly offer one-visit crowns. However, if you’ve received a temporary crown from another dentist and can’t contact them, feel free to reach out to us! We’ll try our best to schedule a time for you to see us as soon as possible. In the meantime, try reattaching the crown with a small dab of toothpaste or dental wax to keep it in place.

Severe Toothache

First, try flossing and rinsing around the affected tooth; this should dislodge any food particles that might be causing the pain. If this doesn’t work, please contact us.

Severely Bleeding Lip/Broken Jaw

In these situations, please proceed straight to your nearest emergency room for treatment. These are extreme injuries and we want you to receive help as soon as possible!

Banish Bad Breath with These Helpful Hints from Drs. D’Amico and Mauck

June 25, 2013

Bad breath (also commonly referred to as halitosis) is embarrassing. It can cause you embarrassment and humiliation in social settings, not to mention the power it has to negatively impact your professional life. Even worse is the fact that experiencing chronic bad breath can be a sign of more serious health problems. If you find your self-confidence hindered by bad breath, come in to D’Amico and Mauck, DDS in Aurora – our team will be happy to help you find the cause of your condition and provide the dedicated, personalized care you need to face the world with a big smile again. In the meantime, here are some helpful tips that you should keep in mind:

  • The most common cause of bad breath is simple enough: poor dental hygiene, especially where the tongue is concerned. The tongue provides a comfortable home for all kinds of bacteria, and if you rarely clean that far back in your mouth, it can cause problems. Cleaning and flossing regularly, as well as paying special attention to that area, should help alleviate bad breath.
  • Additionally, certain illnesses and problems can cause bad breath as well, including cavities, gum disease, lung disease, dry mouth, gastrointestinal issues, diabetes, and liver problems. Patients who suffer from one or more of these problems should pay extra close attention to the state of their breath.
  • Thinking about investing in mouthwash or mints in order to solve the problem? While these tools may provide a temporary cover-up, they shouldn’t be relied on as a solution.
  • Do you experience bad breath only once in a while? No problem. But if this is a chronic issue that plagues you daily, please visit Dr. D’Amico and Dr. Mauck soon so that we can determine if a deeper problem is occurring.

Don’t let bad breath keep chipping away at your confidence – instead, contact our Aurora, CO office today to schedule an appointment! We welcome patients from all over the Denver area, including Centennial, Eaglewood, Parker, and beyond.

Save Your Smile during Dental Emergencies with Tips from D’Amico and Mauck, DDS

March 12, 2013

As much as some of us would like to be prepared for every possible inconvenience, it’s important to remember that life can be unpredictable. Emergencies tend to happen at the worst possible times, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be rectified quickly and effectively. Drs. D’Amico and Mauck are committed to providing you with excellent, reliable care no matter the circumstances, even if it’s on short notice. If you suffer a dental emergency, contact our Aurora, CO office as soon as possible. In the meantime, here are some helpful tips for what to do in common dental emergencies to improve your condition until we can see you:

I knocked my tooth out!

First, rinse the tooth gently. Then, place it back into its socket and hold it in place. Be sure not to force it in! If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a bag or cup of milk. Once you arrive at our Aurora office, we can determine whether reattachment is possible.

I have a really bad toothache!

Rinse your mouth extensively and floss in order to dislodge any food particles or debris that could be causing the problem. If this doesn’t alleviate the pain, call our office. While it’s all right to take an aspirin, please refrain from placing it directly on the affected tooth; this can damage the gum tissue.

I broke one of my teeth!

Rinse the fragment of your tooth. Then, use a cold compress to alleviate the swelling and pain until we can see you.

If think you might be suffering from a more serious problem, like a broken jaw, or if you’re bleeding excessively, please go straight to your local emergency room.

If you suffer a dental emergency, don’t panic – here at D’Amico and Mauck, DDS, our dedicated team will work hard to make sure you get the effective, thorough care you deserve as quickly as possible. You can read about other dental emergencies here, or call our Aurora, CO office today to schedule an appointment with Dr. D’Amico or Dr. Mauck.
